Giving Locally, Giving Globally
The Rotary Club of Woodside and Portola Valley is a service organization
of local business and professional leaders. It is one of more than 27,000
clubs worldwide dedicated to providing community service. The Rotary Club
is very active both in our community and internationally. We facilitated many
projects with funds from last year’s Taste of Woodside including providing
over 165 McMillan’s Dictionary for Children to third grade students in the
more challenged local schools.
In addition, we gave book scholarships for graduating seniors at Eastside
Preparatory in East Palo Alto and Summit High in Redwood City. Recipient
students exemplify the “Service above Self” motto of Rotary. We also
support the National Center for Equine Facilitated Therapy (NCEFT),
WHOA’s Day of the Horse, Rebuilding Together and Environment Day.
Internationally, we have projects in conjunction with local Rotary Clubs in
Antigua, Guatemala, Bali, Indonesia, and Quito, Ecuador. These projects
include purchasing books and computers for a community library in remote
indigenous community in northwestern Guatemala, a clean water and
sanitation project for villages in rural Guatemala, bridge building in rural
Nepal, school scholarships in Bali and Guatemala and support for a job
training program and micro-finance in Quito, Ecuador.
Most recently the Rotary Club of Woodside/Portola Valley has supported
the application of
Bassam Aramin, a Palestinian who has devoted his life to peace in the
Middle East, for the Rotary World Peace Fellowship, which will enable him
to study at one of Rotary’s global peace centers.
With all of these projects and others being proposed, fund raising is vital to
our club’s success. We would like to invite you to support Taste of
Woodside with a personal donation or corporate sponsorship. Taste of
Woodside was a huge success last year netting nearly $30,000 for our
projects and our 2009 goal is $40,000.
